Rev Teo How Ken, the founder of Rumah Charis, started an outreach to the desolate elderly in the Klang Valley in 1988. He later set up a home for the aged and registered it as a social organization in 1993. Though it had begun as an Old Folks Home, Rumah Charis has expanded to include the Children’s Home, Very Special Old People’s club (VSOP) and the House of Bread.
Rev Teo, the Executive Director of Rumah Charis is an active social community worker as well as church pastor. He also serves as an Executive Committee member of the government social welfare council. He received the Outstanding Young Malaysian award in 1992 and Outstanding Citizen award in 2000 for his contribution to society.
The Old Folks’ Home provides shelter, support and medical care to old folks who are destitute. Currently there are two homes for the aged. _disibledevent="on">Penang, which established in year 1998. The Children’s Home serves as a shelter for orphans and children of single parents. Rumah Charis aims to create a conducive environment for growing children by offering them healthy home care and activities. The organisation also seek to provide spiritual direction, education and counselling for the children. Children Home was established in year 1994.
